Logo Investigation

Columbia Pictures

Columbia Pictures is an American film production studio that is an association with Sony pictures entertainment. In the year of 1924, Columbia Pictures used a logo incorporating a female Roman soldier holding a shield in her left hand and a stick of wheat in her right hand.

1924 Before the film studio was named Columbia Pictures it was named CBC films, it stood for Cohn Brothers and Joe Brandt (The people who founded the company) The company was renamed in 1924 and then first Columbia Pictures logo was born. In 1925 the logo was simplified and modernized by creating a black background and making the female soldiers stance more powerful and confident. Instead of an oval shape for the logo Columbia pictures undertook a more circular approach The logo was redesigned in 1932 and this time Columbia Pictures decided to incorporate color to the logo. They added in a red color font to the "Columbia pictures' text and the background behind the lady was red color as well. The lady was printed in a while color to contrast the red background. This was a revolutionary logo for its time.  In 1933 to 1936 they decided to get deviate from the red and white design and reverted back to the black and white slick design, The emblem looked more powerful and professional this way. The contrast of black and white conveyed a sense of influence and authority about the woman.

1936-1938 This was a evolutional change for the logo, they had scraped the circular design and incorporated a rectangular design.  They kept the statue of liberty but there was a lot of attention to detail which was added this time round. The rays of of sunshine that shone through became bolder and the inscription was now excited in two colors to gain a volume to the design and made this look more dynamic.

1938-1945 In these years the company had reverted back to its old ways and adopted the circular design once more. The logo has been simplied and lost all the attention to detail. For example the rays compared to the previous logo have lost its volume and 3d design and had just become straight lines. The typeface of the lettering is also changed to a more confident and strict one.

1945-1964 In 1945 the studio decides to use the secondary logo from 1936 as its main. In this design they was no circles surrounding the lady of liberty and no rectangle. The lady of liberty was the main attraction.1964-1975 In 1964 Columbia Pictures had released the most minimalistic logo structure in the whole history of the company. All it was a "C" with a torch coming through the bottom of the "C". The symbol was stored in an edged square box.

1975-1891 A completely new design was created in 1975. A bold black watermark was used with a black semi circle with what looks like sun rays rising through the bottom of this circle. Creating a strong contrast between the black and white colors. The "Columbia Pictures" text is in a bold black font which is easy to read.1981-1989 The company extends the semi circle and connects a rectangle shape at the bottom of the semi circle this creates a extended effect to the logo previous as it reveals a full circle of rays and the full body of the statue of liberty.

1989-1992 This design is basically the same as the previous but just removes the black semi circle design. This puts the statue as the soul focus in the design.

1992- Today this is the logo currently for Columbia Pictures. The emblem in its right. The lettering is executed in a strict geometric sans-serif, with the square shape of the letters and distinct bold lines. As for the emblem, it is a delicate yet strong image of the iconic lady. It is a timeless logo with a legendary symbol, celebrating the company’s history and background. A perfect representation of elegance, power and authority.

Paramount Pictures

The first version of the logo of Paramount Pictures were released in 1914, the author being William Hodkinson. It consisted of a black and white image, a mountain with a snowy top. This mountain was surrounded by a halo of stars and the title "Paramount Pictures" were included in the sky and at the foot of the mountain.

In 1953 Paramount included this new design which was basically the same as the first logo but the difference was the addition of color and the mountain had become clearer because of this addition. We can now see the snowy peak a lot more in detail

In 1968 the logo has not changed a lot but there was a difference in fonts and the addition of " A gulf+ Western company" The picture has become more "zoomed" in as we can see there is less trees and the focus on the mountain is more prominent.

In 1975 there was more of a realistic take on the logo with the removal of the mountain picture all together and being replaced with a animated version. The logo was still the same but just the replacement for more an animated and minimalistic view.

In 1986 Paramount got rid of the animated view and went back to its old ways of being a picture of a mountain. The mountain basically the same but included a orange sunset peaking behind the mountain, the font on the Paramount 75th was published in a silver color and the "anniversary" in a gold finish.

2002 With the logo being realized this is one of the closest version of the logo to present times. The "90th" Anniversary has replaced the "75th" which celebrated how long this corporation has been operating for, which can also showcase this was a successful company. With this picture there was more of a "frosty" approach as the mountain looks as if it is high up in the sky as it is being hugged by clouds.

In 2022, after Viacom CBS was rebranded as Paramount Global, the by-line was permanently removed. This leaves the logo simple and minimal with the just the word Paramount shown.

Warner bros pictures

From 1929- 1937 Warner Brothers created their first logo design which was a fairly simplistic design with "WB" being surrounded by a shield and the text "Warner Bros Pictures" This is a very simplistic design compared to a logo-like Paramount. This logo was used on Looney tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons.

1937-1953 A banner was added in 1937 to this logo and this banner wrapped around the shield-like structure a design that would resonate within many of its subsequent logo designs.

Warner Bros. Pictures (first era) 1948–1967

In 1948, the WB shield was introduced to resemble a shield without a banner. This put more emphasis on the shield structure and not on the actual companys name.

In 1967 for the first time the famous "WB" was not used in this logo variation, instead the symbol "W7" has been used which is symbolic of their merger with the seven arts.

1970-1972

This was the first time in warner bros. history that color was used in their logo. The use of a striking red color created a sense of power and authority within the design. The use of gold as well created a feeling of royalty and prestige. Again still sticking to the simplistic design of a shield.

1972-1990
Saul bass was brought onto the team in 1972 to rebrand the logo. And he did something that had never been done before in Warner bros. history..... He ditched the shield design. The logo was short-lived though as most films returned to the classic shield and W.B. initials. However, there are still some modern-day movies that still opted to use this logo like the movie Argo.

1993-2019 After the Saul bass redesign of the logo Warner bros decided to revert back to their old ways, the shield was brought back and the banner was back as well.  A simplistic and sleek design.

2019- Present   Finally in the present day we have seen the return of color but this time the color blue was used in contrast to the red used in 1970.  It debuted in the final trailer of Tenet (2020) and was given a proper animation to accompany it in 2021, which first appeared in the HBO Max original movie, Locked Down.

Pixar- Pixar unlike other film companies has not gone through as many changes in their logo design as they have not been around for as long as the other competitors. They have only had 3 changes in their logo design.

1979 – 1986 This was Pixars first logo design and if u did not know about the back story behind Pixar then this log may be very confusing. Pixarn was actually called the graphics group. The pill-shaped design incorporated a "G". The two parts of the “pill” were connected by the white letter “C”, which was facing down. “The” in white, “Graphics” in red, and “Group” in black. Under the badge “The Art of Visual Communication” was written in black, with the “Art” red.

1986 – 1994 In 1987 Steve Jobs purchase The Graphics Group and renamed the organization Pixar. With the new purchase, there was a complete redesign of the logo. Drawing a gray square with white and black edges and a circular dent in the middle. This design was meant to resemble the "Imagine computers" which were nicknamed "the bsd"

1994–present During the production of Toy Story in 1994, Pixar began referring to itself as Pixar Animation Studios and got rid of the square logo in favor of a wordmark set in the Charlemagne Bold typeface. This logo was created by current Pixar CCO Pete Docter. The font was created by Carol Twombly in 1989-2002 and published by Adobe. This current logo is simplistic and has created an iconic brand js through the use of a font.

The animation used in most Disney movies looks like this:

Marvel Studios

1993 – 1996

This logo has a cold and stony feel to it as the Marvel is made out of a lifeless cold metal material. The background to this design is a wide letter ‘M’ that is also used by the company as a sort of secondary emblem. There was also a red and yellow cursive word saying "films"across this second part.

1996 – 2002

The logo stayed the same, except they added a yellow illumination effect to the left side of the emblem, as well as changed ‘Films’ to ‘Studios’. The use of a yellow color made the logo feel not as cold as before.

2002 – 2008

This was the start of the Marvel logo that most people would recognize to this current date. The most simple design is a red box with a white san serif font in the middle.

2008 – 2013

The logo, created for Marvel in 2008 featured an iconic scarlet-red rectangle with narrowed white sans-serif lettering on it. All the thick letters were placed close to each other and even glued at some points. The bottom part of the badge featured two thick parallel lines and the word “Studios” between them.

2013 – 2016

The redesign in  2013 placed the “Studios” part under the main badge, writing it in black and putting on a white background without any framing. The Marvel text still remains the same from 2012.

2016 – Today

This marvel studios logo is one of the most recognizable logos in the world. The plain and simplistic design has gone a long way and created such a strong brand when seen without having to be fancy and add in a lot of detail

Sensational Studios logo:
  • For our group, we have chosen to go with an elegant design, which can tie in with the name "Sensational"
  • The colors Gold and Black would be more suitable as these two colors evoke a feeling of prestige and high class.
  • Our name sensation studios is a long name so it would be quite tricky to fit that in a minimalistic design so we have chosen to substitute this with "SS" just like warner bros did in their designs.
  • In our group we want to create a connotation of high quality that exceeds expectations.
Our logo:
